A fully automated container terminal, a component of the fourth phase of the Nansha port area of Guangzhou Port, was put into operation on July 28. It was jointly funded by Guangzhou Port Company Limited, Zhongshan City Construction Group Company Limited and Foshan Public Utilities Holding Co Ltd.

This terminal is the world's first fully-automated terminal for river-sea-railway multimodal transport and the first of its kind newly built within the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. It will inject new vitality into the development of international shipping, the construction of a bearing zone of new technology and scientific advancements and the establishment of a world-class port cluster within the Greater Bay Area.

The terminal has 4 berths for 100,000-ton seagoing vessels and supporting container barge berths. It adopts such cutting-edge technologies as Beidou navigation, 5G communication, AI and unmanned driving.

The terminal is designed to handle 4.9 million twenty-feet equivalent units (TEUs) of goods every year, including 1.9 million TEUs for river transportation.

"Sanjiao Town is just about 30 kilometers away from Nansha port area. Our products will be exported from here, with lower costs and higher efficiency," said Li Hui, chairman of a Zhongshan-based company with an annual production value of over 100 million yuan. The company mainly sells products to Europe, America, South Korea, Japan among other countries and regions. "The new automated terminal will facilitate export expansion for enterprises."
